flower power and American Art Collector Ad

painted today but kinda hate the results so instead heres what I did yesterday :) My son and I got the veggie garden up and running (he'll tell you its HIS garden) and then we went wild with the fence. our favorite is the liscence plate flower...we want to make more so if youve got some you wouldnt mind parting with send them our way!!! email me and I'll give our address...it would be fun to see where we get them from
also, made my favorite 'salad bowl' pots for the deck... oh yeh and I have an ad coming out in the June issue of American Art Collector magazine!! it is on the newstands today-I think- so go pick one up and check it out. I'm really happy with it. My brother and sister-in-law helped me with the design layout - actually they did it all and did a great job! talented couple: those 2.

One - daily painting, beach scenes

back to it today with a vengence. painted for 4 hours, then shipped 4 paintings. treated myself to an iced coffee after that marathon. :)
I've painted this image before and always come back to it. I dont like to reveal wether I like a painting or not but this one I do love, it speaks to me in so many ways. - the warmth on her shoulder just plain rocks. :)

Fox Terrier, daily painting, small dog series

fox terrier is next in the small dog series. A fox terrier was my first experience with a 'pure breed' dog. When I was 10 my best friend had one. They called her Kelley but her 'official' name was Lady Kelley of Salisbury St. My dog - a mutt - was just plain Lady...and a fine one at that...she didnt need a title ;) --as for the painting, I am loving the yellow.

Jack Russell -daily painting,small dog series

small dog, small painting. this is the first from a little series of dogs. saw -tooth hanger on the back for easy hanging and the sides of the wood are painted black. Personally, I like my dogs big but I can appreciate the huge personalities that the little breeds have and had fun painting them.
The plan is to make some prints of these, I'll let you know when I get around to that. :) May is such a busy month - almost as busy as December if thats possible.

May Day -daily painting,plein air

May Day. I love May. What better way to spend the day than with my dog doing a little plein air. My car is still out of commission with its mystery illness so we walked to this spot. -down the end of our road and on the river. Started out painting the water but this view behind just begged to be painted. Its the top of a big 3 story victorian that is right on the busy road but from my spot on the water the apple trees in bloom and the marsh block the view of the cars. Its so pretty from this angle, couldnt help imagining a time gone by.

Ive been scarce but busy. Ive got a few new things brewing which I will tell you about soon, along with some new artwork and an update for my etsy shop, not to mention a major case of the gardening bug. happy spring all! stay tuned for my update tomorrow.

Neighborhood Spring - daily painting, Monday Plein Air

Well, I'm supposed to be meeting some other artists early on Monday Mornings for a plein air session but I havent made it yet! todays reason was car trouble (yawn) So I decided to still do a plein air - just from home. We've been having some seriously nice weather lately so why not?
this happens to be the a view towards my friend Charlottes house. this was a quicky but has a nice feel I think,- spring in the neighborhood at last.

A Spring Thing - daily painting,floral still life

not a big fan of painting green or yellow so I challanged myself today with this. - it was hard, first it was hard deciding WHAT to paint, then I moved the stuff around a million times, then the decision making of 'what color where' started. I think to much with green instead of just instinctively putting down color,value, line etc. Really I love those days when I paint and my mind is somewhere else - thinking,listening to music, daydreaming then I focus and 'hey thats a nice painting' . Its a form of meditating I suppose. Today, I had that a little but mostly it was struggling with color.
I was going to do some little ones also but now I have a headache! so this is it for today.

Spring Birds

spring is slow to come around here, but the subtle signs are out there. Walking my dog in the morning, its usually quiet, not anymore - the birds are making a racket, singing,chirping. love it.



I entered these 2 paintings in the Art League RI Associate Members Show at Gallery 297 in Bristol RI and both got in!! The opening is Sunday from 1-3 , come by and say Hi. I just got back from helping to hang the show and it looks great.

painting the beach AGAIN - sorry if its getting boring - actually have soooo many ideas rattling my brain that they wake me up, so i always have to focus and paint the familiar before moving on. wanted to make her cover up yellow but had a hard time of it SO went back to the pink - familiar - it works but yellow would have really popped.

"In the Soup" = a surfing term for being in the white foam of a wave after it has broken.

below is a 4x4" acrylic of Shadow, my sons classroom bear who spent the weekend with us. He just HAD to have his portrait painted,looking oh so dapper in his naval uniform :)

Spring Cleaning

No painting to post although I was busy painting today. -Working on some bigger still lifes.

More of that and a commission,some shipping,paperwork to catch up on,framing,show drop off, hopefully I will slip in a 'daily' painting or two but this is a busy week. stay tuned, you never know :-)

Hydrangeas and Oranges

Happy Spring!!!! New beginnings... rebirth...fresh start.... I'm thinking today is a better day to make a change than New Year's Day. I've got a few in mind for myself, including painting bigger more often and experimenting, which brought me to todays still life. Trying to stay loose and painterly, this was fun. The composition is a little wonky but it really was a spur of the moment painting, I just dove right in and didnt fuss, this is all a bunch of stuff on my studio table, (I brought the hydrangeas down to brighten my basement space today :)

Our Spot

What's my emotional connection to this image? It is totally romantic. I NEVER had a baby sit in my lap at the beach. They were always running somewhere. I can relate to how she is looking around, possible watching an older child and all the 'stuff '. I love painting the 'stuff'.

Incoming Tide

Its windy cold March. Trying to 'feel' that hot sun, and that end of a good beach day warmth. Some artists are drawn to their subjects by a color or subject. For me, its more about an emotional draw, something has to really grab me in some personal way. There needs to be an emotional connection. Then hopefully that feeling gets passed onto the viewer.

A Little Party

hmmm, seems my system has gone a little haywire for those of you who get my daily emails. sorry about the re-post. I have no idea why that happens, and dang! yesterday was my big 1year blog -aversary speech too. please go back and check out my blog for that....

meanwhile, still havent gotten the cupcakes out of my system, so there will be lots of celebrating this week ;) I am totally obsessed with painting the wrapper -especially the chocolate ones, but my favorite part of this painting is the shadow of the chocolate cupcake in the center - in particular the lighter blue next to the dark dark brown...love it.

Celebrate!

I just realized that March 11th is the one year birthday of my blog! A Blogaversary of sorts.
Its a special day for me. My son suggested last year that I start with a cupcake - to celebrate...so year 2 will start the same way.
Never did I imagine-one year ago- all that would come from this. My blog started as a way to stay committed to a daily disipline of painting, to make myself accountable so I could grow as an artist and get my groove on -so to speak.
Now, Ive done that and sooo much more. The power of the internet amazes me everyday. Not since leaving RISD have I had this community of artists to support me,to bounce ideas off of, to learn from, to commiserate with, to be INSPIRED by. It is truly amazing. There has been so much learning and growing,opportunities and challenges too. And -OH MY GOSH- there are a whole bunch of you who get my paintings in your mailbox everyday! How cool is that? Its like you all come over to my (imaginary internet)studio for a cup of coffee and some art everyday...talk about creative inspiration! THAT is it! **thank you! thank you! **
My little paintings are all over the country now - in the homes of all the lovely people who have enjoyed them enough to purchase one - there are even several overseas!! Never did I imagine that. **thank you, thank you!**
There IS beauty in this world, thanks for sharing with me. namaste.

Beach Warmth

I've got a 'thing' for painting these 'mom' suits, but this time I used a nice red ground and tried to stay loose. I had a dream the other night that we only went to the beach ONCE last year, how horrible! Since its dreary around here now, I wanted to capture that soaking in the sun feeling

Pink Hat

just in case you thought I only paint people from the side or back :).... working on some other things, this was the quick 'use up the paint on the palette' painting from yesterday. I always doodle faces, this is kinda like that, except with paint. Very fun, I could do these all day...except its time to go vote.....
