Seriously, to paint outside in January in New England is a real gift.  I Love it.

no painting today - instead my niece and I went for a nature walk at the beach and hit the jackpot! first we found a robins egg - at the beach! who knew?? then...we followed fresh deer tracks! we must have just missed him!!! and THEN.....a 30 ft. humpback whale (dead)!!!

very smelly but still cool to see. I love the beach. Something new everyday...it'll be a while before I can top this though ;)

Painted this yesterday at Goosewing Beach in Little Compton RI looking towards Westport, Mass. Favorite thing to do: plein air at the beach with my dog. He looked at me with an expression like "seriously, we're painting today? my drool is freezing. Ok, cool, I'll go roll in something smelly"

my goal for the next month is to paint (and post) everyday! Since February is the month for love, might as well do what I love AND paint what I love. So #1 is Foggy, cause there is nothing I love more than a foggy day at the beach and these little beach scenes are soooo much fun to paint.

I've got a 'thing' for painting these 'mom' suits, but this time I used a nice red ground and tried to stay loose. I had a dream the other night that we only went to the beach ONCE last year, how horrible! Since its dreary around here now, I wanted to capture that soaking in the sun feeling

Moms On Duty

I love to work on a painting with the title already in my head. For some reason its more fun. About 6 titles were bouncing around, this is the one that won out. We're so lucky-my friends and I- that this is the way we spend many of our summer days. Sweet. But not easy, as every mom knows ...we are ON DUTY the whole time. ...but still. aren't we always? might as well be at the beach.

Digging the Beach

Another oil painting of children at the beach. I just cant seem to stop. This one I really like because it is painterly and I like the colors. And its got one of those great shadows I just love to paint. Speaking of colors, my 'go-to' colors are naples yellow, cerulean blue,french ultra marine and cad red light. I paint with them most often. Maybe tomorrow I should try a different palette and subject matter, maybe not :-).

So what are your favorite colors to paint with? Maybe I'll get inspired to try something new.

Painted at the beach today. What a gorgeous day! a bit windy though and once again spilled my medium! but I'm happy with this one and the day. The golden rod and asters in the beach grass and roses are in full bloom. Gorgeous. I love this time of year. Below check out all my goodies I picked up at the farm stand on the way home. Now thats some fall inspiration! :-)

This I actually painted on 8x8 but I think it looks better cropped (this is the cropped version)so when its dry I will cut it down and resign it. The photo also doesnt really capture the vivid color. I tried. Below is a photo that I just cant help calling "I 'heart' the beach" The beach we go to (Briggs Beach,Little Compton) is actually loaded with rocks which I almost always dont paint-artistic liscence :-) BUT we are always on the lookout for 'heart' rocks and for the last couple of years we bring them home and toss them in a bowl on our dining room table. This is a photo of them. We 'heart' the beach.

Its finally raining here, so I was inspired to paint the beach in the fog....my favorite beach weather. Right now this is drying on my kitchen window sill and I have to admit it is one of my favorites of late. Not sure why, maybe its the 'feeling' or the colors or the fact that I love the beach on a foggy day or the free loose manner in which it was painted, maybe its all of the above. At any rate, I like it and now I'm going to clean up and put away some summer stuff, dare I say 'it may be time to get Mums'. Some of you are probably alittle sick of the beach scenes and wondering when the fall scenes will pop up. Ive got a few more beachy ones to get out of my system but oooh the warm side of the color wheel is starting to look real tempting ;-)

I know painting little kids at the beach is a cliche BUT this is my life, its what I did and my kids and friends kids do now. Now that the end of summer is near I feel like painting these beach scenes, kinda like a tourist taking home shells or sand to try and capture a bit of the magic of a summer at the beach. My oldest son is 13 and well, his beach enthusiasm has changed a bit but when he was little, this was him, running back and forth with a truck.

This image speaks to me because like her, I can remember carefully placing stones and shells on my castles when I was a girl, getting lost in the magical little world I could create. Every kid should get to build a sandcastle.
