Seasons End

Painted at the beach today. What a gorgeous day! a bit windy though and once again spilled my medium! but I'm happy with this one and the day. The golden rod and asters in the beach grass and roses are in full bloom. Gorgeous. I love this time of year. Below check out all my goodies I picked up at the farm stand on the way home. Now thats some fall inspiration! :-)

Beach Bright

Maybe if it actually starts to FEEL like fall around here I'll start to paint something besides the beach. Anyway, the more I paint the more I have the urge to move away from realism into ....well, I'm not sure, something simple? loose? graphic? Its a constant battle. In this it was all about just color. yummy crisp color (once again my photo doesnt do it justice) and that shadow on the blanket. I like that.
***dont forget, if you are in the area the RISD alumni, student sale is on Oct. 6th 10-4 on Benefit St. in front of the museum. Its a great time and place to pick up some neat art. I'll be there with lots of paintings and some prints too. Come by and say HI.***

Beach Color SOLD

This I actually painted on 8x8 but I think it looks better cropped (this is the cropped version)so when its dry I will cut it down and resign it. The photo also doesnt really capture the vivid color. I tried. Below is a photo that I just cant help calling "I 'heart' the beach" The beach we go to (Briggs Beach,Little Compton) is actually loaded with rocks which I almost always dont paint-artistic liscence :-) BUT we are always on the lookout for 'heart' rocks and for the last couple of years we bring them home and toss them in a bowl on our dining room table. This is a photo of them. We 'heart' the beach.

Beach Day Fog SOLD

Couldnt resist another of these, they are very fun to paint. I've been painting alot to get ready for the RISD alumni sale. So stay tuned, I'll have a preview and more info soon.
And for the New Englanders out there....was this a gorgeous fall day or what? I got out this morning for a run and am starting to get some fall inspiration brewing. This weather is the best. Also, If you are in the area check out the Yoga Loft this week in Warren for some free yoga classes. more info here: http://www.yogaloftri.com/ namaste.

Wrapping Up

So when I was painting this and thinking about the title I thought "Perfect, this will be last beach painting for a while". But I am having to much fun with them so there may be more. :-)

Beach Fog SOLD

Its finally raining here, so I was inspired to paint the beach in the fog....my favorite beach weather. Right now this is drying on my kitchen window sill and I have to admit it is one of my favorites of late. Not sure why, maybe its the 'feeling' or the colors or the fact that I love the beach on a foggy day or the free loose manner in which it was painted, maybe its all of the above. At any rate, I like it and now I'm going to clean up and put away some summer stuff, dare I say 'it may be time to get Mums'. Some of you are probably alittle sick of the beach scenes and wondering when the fall scenes will pop up. Ive got a few more beachy ones to get out of my system but oooh the warm side of the color wheel is starting to look real tempting ;-)

A Good Match

I like this title. :-) I like their matching outfits. I imagine them having spent years strolling the beach together. Maybe this day was their anniversary...like my parents, who just celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. A Good Match.

Summer Shoes 3

The people paintings which I do love to paint more than all other subjects are a bit taxing, so usually I have to follow up with something loose and simple. (and sometimes a nap!) Still inspired by summer at the beach though

Last One In... SOLD

4Wheeling

I know painting little kids at the beach is a cliche BUT this is my life, its what I did and my kids and friends kids do now. Now that the end of summer is near I feel like painting these beach scenes, kinda like a tourist taking home shells or sand to try and capture a bit of the magic of a summer at the beach. My oldest son is 13 and well, his beach enthusiasm has changed a bit but when he was little, this was him, running back and forth with a truck.

Spinning

Still need to finish up a commission, making new panels, waiting for frames so I can frame more for the gallery, trying to get organized before school starts...its a little crazy right now. I think I'll be a sporadic painter/poster for the next few days, bare with me until I can get the groove back (other wise known as 'Back to School' :-)! )

A Bunch of Friends

6x6" oil on masonite panel
One of the best things about painting is how it can be like meditating...at least for me, but I suspect it is like that for other artists as well. Your mind has a task to focus on. For this it was really trying hard NOT to zoom in and crop like I usually do. It was hard! Also, I think about alot of other stuff when I paint. While working on this I was thinking about how I draw Black Eyed Susans ALL the time in my doodles and sketchbooks and have for years. They are like old friends, I know them so well. Then I was thinking about if all the Susan's out there in the world like these flowers or not? I'll have to ask the Susan I know. Lastly, I was thinking "Why didnt I crop and make a more interesting composition?!"
Coolest thing about daily painting is ...tomorrow! another day, another painting. Tomorrow I crop!

Lunch

A cooked crab on a paper plate. How summery is that? Had some time alone today and did a couple little paintings outside on my deck. Everyone got home while I was working on this so I stopped here. I just love how summery this is.
Also today, Marissa, a very creative and BUSY artist over at Creative Thursday http://www.creativethursday.com/blog/ posted a picture I sent to her of one of her little panda prints I bought and put in my sons room. Check it out. I listen to her podcasts when I need a little dose of creative spark. thanks Marissa!

A Beach Life

6x6" oil on masonite panel
It was windy at the beach today but I brought my paint and was determined to get a painting done...inspite of the fact that I spilled a whole jar of medium in my backpack and only brought a paper palette, which is a really bad idea in the wind! I had 2 of my boys and 2 of their friends so while they were busy hunting for blue crabs (see below) I set up shop out of the wind near the parking lot and beach roses and this is what I came up with. I actually really like this. I'm going to try to photograph it again. It is very hard to capture some paintings correctly.

Beach Talk SOLD

A plein air again at the beach. I was feeling a little under the weather today but it was so pretty this evening, I grabbed my paint and headed out. Really, I'm Supposed to be working on a commission but just cant seem to get going on it. (hate it when that happens). Also, I was just going to paint a landscape...the cloud, water, grass...but this couple walked by and I couldnt resist putting them in...seems I have a 'thing' for people.... I'm looking forward to the fall and really getting into painting again. It is difficult with all the boys home and hardly a routine But its all good, and I'm painting waaay more than ever.

By the River

Took a break from my Harry Potter reading and went down the road to this spot with my dog. He thinks when I paint outside that its the best thing ever. He went swimming and also rolled in something REALLY smelly. I kept 2 of the 4 little paintings I did, got 3 horsefly bites and a sunburn but still agree with Bode, painting outside is fun.

Sunny

NFS---Well today was one of those days when I just couldnt make the brushes do what I wanted. This is a big sign I painted a few years ago to hang on our front door for the summer. When I doodle, usually its one of these suns or a flower in a pot. I may start doing those with paint and posting them over in 'Deb's Studio' and making some prints soon for a shop over at Etsy. I also made a little book of my first 50 daily paintings. I'm waiting to recieve my copy from the printers, if I like it I will offer up some copies for purchase. So many things to do so little time...I will hopefully be back to my 'daily painting' tomorrow.....and to all my faithfull viewers, the other artists Ive met and people who have purchased a painting -Thanks so much, you all help make this fun for me and keep me going.

Sunflowers #2

6x6" oil on masonite panel
It is like my brain sees in zoom lens only....I try to paint the whole still life...but I always seem to super crop it when I sketch it out. Zeroing in on what drew me to the scene in the first place. I wonder what would happen if I put the vase on the other side of the room? Would I still zoom in? I bet I would :-)

Puddle Path SOLD

6x6" oil on masonite panel SOLD
I went out and did a plein air tonite and this photo I took at the site so the color is a little weird, it was getting dark when I left. Lots of people out and lots of shore birds,a really nice night for painting. There were 15 different things I felt like painting but I ran out of light. In this one I'm really happy with the mud. I like the looseness and the way the darker underpainting peaks through creating an interesting edge. Also, the people were 4 friends having wine and chinese food and lots of laughs. nice night for that too.

Making Memories SOLD

6x6" oil on masonite SOLD
My blogger posting page has changed. I can no longer do stuff like make the type a different color. Anyone else out there having this problem??
I like this little painting. I prefer to suggest rather than be totally realistic. It is a constant battle...painting the way you want or the way your brain tells you...or someone saying "why don't they have a face?" Um, I dont know, I didnt FEEL like it I guess.
