March beach, plein air, Debbie Miller

6x6" oil on panel
Today is my teaching day - so no painting today.  But last week, I got to the beach and did a couple of quick plein air paintings.  It was 38 degrees and a little windy but I managed.  The above painting was my first.  Tomorrow I'll post the second I did - quicker and more simple - but I like it.
my supervisor and my set up.  Sat in the sand with my box.  My french easel broke plus it was a little too windy.

Beach Boys -daily painting, plein air, beach series

I had such a nice day, hope you don't mind if I share some of it. First, this little plein air was done at the end of my nice day(again not so great photo of it) - my middle son needed 450 small black rocks for his 'Business America' project - due tomorrow- so off to the RISD beach we went. Knowing looking for that many rocks might take awhile... I brought along my thumb box and asked him and his younger brother to pick a subject and they both said "paint us" (duh - the usual answer :)) So... here they are...one is looking for rocks, the other is skipping rocks. It was absolutely gorgeous out AND no bickering....peace, ahh...take it when I get it.
Earlier I had the pleasure of painting with my niece Mirabel and then went to my youngest school play...scenery done with the kids and my friends Mimi and Katrin. I'm going to savor today for a bit....I am so lucky.

October Light, daily painting plein air at the beach

October Light sold
6x6" oil on masonite
sortof in a painting funk lately. Today, feeling a bit run down, and not wanting to paint at all, I decided to take my dog for a walk at one of my favorite painting spots and see if the mood strikes. A plein air at the beach on a gorgeous October day is surely a cure for the painting blues! The beach grasses that were all green a month or so ago, now are yellow, orange, sienna, ruby red and even lavender! My dog thinks this is definately how we should spend our days.
I cant decide which of these pictures captures the painting better so I am posting both until I decide.

Beach Talk SOLD

A plein air again at the beach. I was feeling a little under the weather today but it was so pretty this evening, I grabbed my paint and headed out. Really, I'm Supposed to be working on a commission but just cant seem to get going on it. (hate it when that happens). Also, I was just going to paint a landscape...the cloud, water, grass...but this couple walked by and I couldnt resist putting them in...seems I have a 'thing' for people.... I'm looking forward to the fall and really getting into painting again. It is difficult with all the boys home and hardly a routine But its all good, and I'm painting waaay more than ever.

By the River

6x6" oil on masonite sold

Took a break from my Harry Potter reading and went down the road to this spot with my dog. He thinks when I paint outside that its the best thing ever. He went swimming and also rolled in something REALLY smelly. I kept 2 of the 4 little paintings I did, got 3 horsefly bites and a sunburn but still agree with Bode, painting outside is fun.

Puddle Path SOLD

I went out and did a plein air tonite and this photo I took at the site so the color is a little weird, it was getting dark when I left. Lots of people out and lots of shore birds,a really nice night for painting. There were 15 different things I felt like painting but I ran out of light. In this one I'm really happy with the mud. I like the looseness and the way the darker underpainting peaks through creating an interesting edge. Also, the people were 4 friends having wine and chinese food and lots of laughs. nice night for that too.
